THE SMITH FAMILY
A snap shot of by-gone days IN VIEW TERRACE 1948-1950
This collection of photographs depicting family and neighbours was kindly submitted by Pamela Hill (nee Smith) and provides a great insight into everyday life up in View Terrace, known as the 'Top Duckets'.
Number 20 View Terrace, the setting for most of the photos, was the home of Hal and Joyce Smith and their family up until 1950 when they moved to a newly-built house in nearby Highfield before going back to their native village of High Spen.

Having gone from pony putter to hewer, Hal Smith worked as a deputy overman at the Brockwell Drift right up until 1962 when the pit closed. A member of the Saint John’s Ambulance Brigade, Hal ws also responsible for administering first aid.
John Harrison, who reported to Hal Smith when he first started working underground as a young lad, remembers him as a very fair, amiable deputy who was highly respected by all the men he oversaw.
